Bush Ranger Cadets

The Bush Ranger Cadet Unit at Mount Lawley Senior High School is a long-standing outdoor education program that develops leadership, resilience, teamwork and environmental stewardship. Established in 1998, the Unit welcomes between 90 and 130 cadets each year from Years 7 to 11.

Weekly Training

The Unit meets every Monday afternoon from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Attendance is expected for all cadets.

Training includes a wide range of practical and environmental learning experiences such as camp craft, survival skills, first aid, conservation and the study of Western Australia’s unique ecosystems and natural environments.

Our Camping Program

Each year cadets participate in an extensive camping program, with at least one camp per term. The program operates on a two-year cycle to provide variety in locations and experiences.

Community Service & Conservation

Community service is an essential component of the program. Cadets contribute to environmental projects both on camp and within the local community, including:

  • Sand brushing and dune care
  • Track building and maintenance
  • Beach clean-ups
  • Tree planting and revegetation projects

Local projects include involvement in:

  • Inglewood Triangle Bushland
  • Perth Royal Show Landcare Exhibit
  • Kwenda Maarlark wetlands at Perth Airport

Instructors & Leadership

The Unit is led by volunteer staff from Mount Lawley Senior High School, supported by local youth leaders, parents and former cadets who return as instructors.

The program has been led by the School Chaplain, Andrew Paul, since 1998. All instructors hold Working With Children Checks and are trained in first aid to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment.

How to Join

Students interested in joining the Bush Ranger Cadet Unit are encouraged to speak with the School Chaplain, Andrew Paul or current cadets to learn more about the program.

Application packages are available outside the Chaplain’s office at the start of Terms 1 and 3 and must be returned by Week 2 (Wednesday) of the application period.

Completed applications should be submitted to the School Chaplain or placed in their pigeonhole at Student Services.

This program operates with the financial support of the Department of Local Government and Communities through the Cadets WA program, and is resourced and supported by the Department of Parks & Wildlife.
