Aboriginal Education

Mount Lawley Senior High School has an award-winning commitment to Aboriginal education and is dedicated to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to achieve their full academic, cultural and personal potential.

Through targeted programs, strong partnerships and personalised support, students are encouraged to pursue excellence in learning while maintaining a strong connection to culture, community and identity.

The school was recognised with the 2021 WA Premier's Excellence in Aboriginal Education Award, reflecting its ongoing commitment to creating pathways for success and empowering Aboriginal students to flourish.

Aboriginal Excellence Program (AEP)

Years 7–9

The Aboriginal Excellence Program (AEP) is a selective academic program designed to support high-achieving Aboriginal students during their middle school years.

The program provides a high-expectation learning environment where students are challenged academically while receiving personalised support to achieve their educational goals.

  • Career and pathway exploration

  • Partnerships with tertiary institutions, including Edith Cowan University and the Kurongkurl Katitjin Centre

The program focuses on developing confident, capable and resilient young people who are equipped to pursue future academic and career success.

Follow the Dream (FTD)

Years 10–12

Follow the Dream is a highly regarded academic enrichment program that supports Aboriginal students to complete Year 12 and pursue university, training or professional career pathways.

Students selected for the program demonstrate academic potential, strong attendance and a commitment to their education. The program provides a supportive environment that encourages students to set ambitious goals and develop the skills required to achieve them.

Students receive:

  • After-school tutoring and study support
  • Individual mentoring and goal setting
  • Personalised learning plans
  • Academic monitoring and feedback
  • Career and university guidance
  • Educational excursions and enrichment activities
  • Access to technology and study resources
  • Ongoing communication between families, mentors and teachers

The program helps students build confidence, strengthen academic performance and prepare for success beyond school.

A Supportive Pathway to Success

Together, the Aboriginal Excellence Program and Follow the Dream create a continuous pathway of support from Years 7 to 12. Through strong relationships, high expectations and a celebration of Aboriginal culture and identity, students are empowered to achieve their aspirations and make a positive impact within their communities and beyond.
