Middle School – Years 7 & 8

At Mount Lawley Senior High School, our Middle School provides a supportive and dynamic environment for students in Years 7 and 8.

With a focus on building strong relationships, fostering resilience, and developing essential academic and personal skills, we ensure students transition successfully into secondary education and thrive in their learning journey.

Our Middle School Approach

Our approach is centred on wellbeing, resilience and academic growth, ensuring every student feels known, supported, and challenged. Middle School students develop skills in:

Resilience and Anti-Bullying

During induction, students explore:

  • Emotional intelligence and strategies for building positive relationships

  • Understanding harassment and bullying from the perspective of victims, bystanders, and perpetrators

  • Confidence to speak up and seek help when harassment occurs

  • Awareness of cyberbullying and safe strategies for reporting and managing incidents

  • A resilient, proactive approach to maintaining a safe and respectful school environment

Time Management and Study Skills

Students learn practical strategies to manage their time and learning, including:

  • Navigating the school, facilities, and resources

  • Using the school diary effectively to plan tasks and deadlines

  • Accessing the school’s IT network and Moodle for learning

  • Breaking tasks into manageable steps and structuring study sessions

  • Creating a Home Learning/Study Timetable to track priorities and progress

Communities and Class Structure

Middle School is organised into five distinct Communities, each with approximately 120 students. Each Community has its own dedicated “home” in the purpose-built Middle School buildings, designed to support flexible teaching approaches and strong teacher-student relationships.

Students remain in the same Community with the same teachers throughout Years 7 and 8, allowing continuity of learning and the development of positive relationships. Each Community includes four form classes aligned with our House system. Where possible, students are placed in the same House as siblings.

For core subjects, English, Mathematics, Science, and Humanities & Social Sciences, students remain with the same teaching team for two years. For Health & Physical Education, Languages Other Than English (LOTE), Technologies, and The Arts, students are grouped according to their selected programs, including:

  • Selective Language Program (Gifted and Talented Languages)

  • Specialist Visual & Performing Arts Program

  • Academic Extension Classes

Apart from these, Year 7 and 8 classes are not streamed, ensuring an inclusive and collaborative learning environment.

All students have access to the school’s specialist facilities for Health & Physical Education, Languages Other Than English (LOTE), Technologies, and The Arts.
